Review: This is probably the best book by Baby Professor that I have read so far! It was organized well with facts about hippos. I was able to learn a lot of new things. The photos were beautiful too. I only had two grievances. I thought the book ended too soon. Like it should have been wrapped up with a similar summary as the beginning. Also, half of the book are double photo spreads. There’s a photo + fact, then double page photo. More of the book could have been taken up with more awesome facts.

Worst part: Ended too soon– needed a wrap up.

Best part: Yay! Learned things!

I liked this kids book about China from Speedy Publishing. Every page is filled with information about cool sites, a lot I didn’t know about. Really, I am shocked that I never knew that there was a gigantic stone Buddha. The writing is somewhat advanced for a little kid. Since the places are all Chinese names, adults may have a hard time pronouncing them as well. There isn’t a glossary to aid either. The photos are okay. I thought that they could have been better. They are high quality and all, but I believed more appropriate pictures could have been shown. There’s some bad grammar too.

Title: Let’s Explore South America

Summary: This picture book will take you the wonderful sights in South America. With a limited number of words, you will have to decide for yourself what each page is all about. This would lead to questions and the burning desire to find answers. Buy a copy today!

This kids book is a failure from start to finish. On the front cover of Let’s Explore South America is the very famous National monument Mount Rushmore, located in South Dakota, USA. That’s in North America. Not South America. Pretty embarrassing when you are promoting an educational travel book to children and can’t get the location correct. Luckily Baby Professor didn’t cover Mount Rushmore as a spot in South America in the book, but that makes its spot on the cover more confusing.

It doesn’t stop there either. There’s only 7 places covered: Mount Picchu, Angel Falls, Christ the Redeemer, Lake Titicaca, Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, and Torres del Paine National Park. That’s it. If you’re like me and are confused why Easter Island or the Galapagos were mentioned, I will explain. Apparently, those two islands are territories of Chile (Easter Island) and Ecuador (Galapagos). Therefore even though they are thousands of miles from the mainland, this book can claim it is part of South America.

Instead of showcasing 14 places, Baby Professor put in another two-page wide photo of the showcased location instead. Do you really need another view of Christ the Redeemer? No.

Here’s 7 more attractions you can visit in South America that Baby Professor missed: Mano del Desierto, Casa Rosada, Plaza de Mayo, Bolívar Square, Porto de Galinhas, Atacama Desert and Salar de Uyuni.

The language in this kids book is a bit advanced for most children. For example, the second sentence has the world ‘biodiverse’. There isn’t a glossary in the back to help kids or parents out.

Let’s Explore South America is an absolute failure. I don’t recommend it to anyone.

Worst part: It’s made of fail.

Best part: That it’s made of fail.

This is such a weird kids book. It’s filled with pages of random history trivia, and not all of it is even fact. Topics for 1st graders reading this book include: tariff tax, federalism, the Battle of Saratoga, nuclear bombs, influenza deaths, incest, Nazis, and MORE. Does that sound grade appropriate to you? No? Yeah, me either. Also, it’s a very plain book. No pictures, just text on colorful backgrounds. I do have to give kudos to Baby Professor for organizing this one. Usually there doesn’t seem to be any order to their books. I wouldn’t recommend this as history books for kids.

Review: I wasn’t fond of this kids book by Baby Professor. It’s supposed to cover popular tourist destinations in North America. However it covers 7 destinations, 5 of which are in the USA, 1 in Canada and the other is shared between the US and Canada. Mexico was not mentioned at all. I mean why? A few of the destinations were a bit odd to me as well. Why did they put in Big Sur (it’s a long highway in California), Alcatraz (yeah, it’s an attraction, but in the top 7 in North America to highlight in a kids book popular?), and Banff National Park in Canada? It is just kind of weird.

Worst part: No Mexico representation.

Best part: Erm… pretty stock photos?

Review: Maybe it’s because I have a BA in history behind me, and am a proclaimed history buff, but this book is a pile of crap.

Let’s start with the cover. Perhaps I am nick-picking but all of the cartoon characters on the front look manic. Not sure what sort of signal the publishers are trying to send out. And if you don’t believe me, just look at their eyes. All four characters have crazy eyes. And why the hell is the one Confederate soldier aiming his rifle right at the lone black Union soldier? It’s kind of tasteless and racist (note: I’m not saying it is inaccurate for the time period, I am saying it might be offensive to have this on the cover of a childrens picture book that was published in 2015). The historical inaccuracy of the cover bothers me as well. Yes, to most people when they think of the American Civil War, they conjure up images of uniformed Southern men in dressed in grey and everyone above the Mason Dixon line dressed in blue. Not so. Without going into a huge amount of details, a lot of soldiers went to war wearing the clothes on their back or even their grandparents’ uniforms. Made it slightly difficult to tell who was who. So they did make uniforms (the grey and blue), but there’s something called money and a governments (especially the Confederacy) had a lack thereof, and so their soldiers dressed in whatever they could. Again, I’m not sure if this is something I am being super nick-picky about, especially since like I stated before the majority of people only know grey and blue. It’s something that irritates me nonetheless. However, the cover designer did a decent job getting the flags right. Good job.

The writing and organization bothers me. The first sentence of this book is: “The Civil War was fought between the Northern and Southern states from 1861-1865”. The second one: “The American Civil War was fought between southern and northern states of the United States”. :-O In what world is that okay? You can’t even get away with repeating sentences like that in elementary school. Yet, they published a book. My God, their editor should be fired. (Let me not get into the inconsistency on if Southern and Northern are capitalized or not. Fire your editor damnit!). The book is filled with iconic Matthew Brady photographs. There’s no explanation to any of the photos for the kids (or parents) to what’s happening in the photos, the context, who is in them, that Matthew Brady and his team took them, etc. Speedy Publishing simply uses the photo as a backdrop for their facts. Half of the pictures are just there to look pretty. There’s a photo but no explanation or fact. The facts don’t match the photos. Even some of the facts they list aren’t 100% facts. We don’t know if Lincoln actually dreamed of his own death before he died. One guy who was Lincoln’s bodyguard claimed this after the President had died. No one else said this. Not Mary Todd, not Tad, not any other bodyguard, not Lincoln himself. Only this one guard. Nice story isn’t? The bodyguard might have been telling the truth. But it seems like such a strange tall-tale. It seems inappropriate to list it as a fact in a kids book.

Also, this picture book is directed toward 4th graders, however it is way above an average 4th grader’s level. It’s more on the level of a 5-6 year old.

What could have made this better?
-A simplified timeline of events
-Facts that matched the photos
-A single lone photo of Abe Lincoln (not him in group photo)
-Facts, not tall-tales
-Redirect this toward the proper grade level

This book is a mess. I’m sorry to say that.

Worst part: Was there an editor?

Best part: Hey, got the flags right.

Grade: F

Recommend For: No one. Please don’t bother.

Title: Let’s Explore Australia
Author: Baby Professor
Year of Publication: 2015
Genre: Childrens
Format: Ebook
Length: 32 pages
First Line: “Australia is a developed country and one of the wealthiest in the world.”

Summary: Open this picture book, and welcome to Australia! Picture books empower a child through participation and imagination. With the limitation in words, the picture book encourages reader participation through imagination. Don’t be surprised if your child springs with stories based on the pictures alone because that’s his/her imagination taking flight. Grab a copy today!

Review: This was a lovely little book about Australia. There’s brief overviews of various tourist destinations like Sydney Harbour Bridge, Blue Mountains National Park, the Gold Coast and more. It’s great to learn about all these different places and why they are famous and the reason people go to them. The photos are beautiful and the spreads are gorgeous. The font colors could have done better on some pages since it blended in with picture.

There’s one photo that is a little odd. it’s the one for Karijini National Park. The guy swimming looks like he is nude. His clothes are even on the rocks. I investigated and found that the stock photo taken at the same time has the guy diving into the water wearing a speedo. But if you don’t look into things like I did, you’ll assume that there’s a photo of a guy swimming nude in this kids book.

Title: Let’s Explore The Construction
Author: Baby Professor
Year of Publication: 2015
Genre: Childrens
Format: Ebook
Length: 32 pages
First Line: “Construction is the process of creating and building infrastructure or a facility.”

Summary: The construction site is a dangerous place to visit but it’s rich in lessons too. With the use of a picture book, your child can be “in” a site but without any danger involved. A picture book is a wonderful tool that helps your child surpass all basic development stages with flying colors. It appeals to the senses, it fuels the mind and it cultivates a love for learning too!

Review: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I wrestled with how to rate this one for a while. This kids book has a lot of pros and cons. It’s cool that there were great real-life stock photos from construction sites for kids to see so they can connect the dots more easily to the word and the real thing. The book went over different construction site roles and equipment in a decent order (not a good one, but better than their usual books). However, the terms used are far too technical and advanced for the targeted age group. I could see a glossary might have been useful, but one wasn’t produced. If your kid is maybe 6-7 years old, is really into construction and you are okay with explaining terms like facility, infrastructure, or excavation, then have at it.

Worst part: Advanced terms

Best part: Stock photos

Title: Let’s Explore Italy
Author: Baby Professor
Year of Publication: 2015
Genre: Childrens
Format: Ebook
Length: 32 pages
First Line: “Italy is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.”

Summary: Italia – the land of pizza and pasta. But do you know that there’s more this delightful place than all the delicious food? This picture book features the must-see places in Italy. It defines great activities that you can do and what to expect the moment you arrive. Picture books are essential in encouraging participation, which is the foundation of active and effective learning. Grab a copy today!

Review: This kids book was only meh. There’s 32 pages but only 7 places in Italy covered (and technically one is actually another country)? C’mon. That’s ridiculous. This books went over: Vactican City (again its own country), Pompeii, Venice Canals, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, and the Colosseum. Here’s 7 more places in Italy that they left out: Mount Etna, Spanish Steps, Milan Cathedral, Bridges of Sighs, Boboli Gardens, Trevi Fountain, and Doge’s Palace. A reason that those and many other sites were combed over was because after each tourist destination, there was a double page spread of a photo of the place. Complete unnecessary. The photos were lovely, but I was irritated enough with the bad use of space in this book that I rated this as I did. It could have been a lot better.

Worst part: C’mon there could have been more.

Title: Let’s Explore the Moon: Moons and Planets for Kids
Author: Baby Professor
Year of Publication: 2015
Genre: Childrens
Format: Ebook
Length: 32 pages
First Line: “The Moon served as light in the night, but what do you know about the MOON?”

Summary: The moon has been the object of several fascinations and explorations, but why? Turn the pages of this coloring book to find out the answer! Picture books are highly effective in breaking down complex information into pieces that are easier to understand. They offer beautiful explanations to some of the most interesting facts. Order your copy today!

Review: I wasn’t at all a fan of this childrens book. Yes, it is about the moon and it stays on point, but that is about all it has going for it. The book goes over random facts about the moon (most likely plucked from the internet) that is not organized in any way. There’s no glossary for kids so the harder phrases, words and concepts they will be left puzzling over. The grammar is horrible; talking about the moon in past tense as if it no longer existed, caps-locking whole words, run-on sentences, etc. The graphics used look fake as if they were photoshopped. However, the facts stated in the book are true and I did learn a thing or two that I didn’t know before. Kudos.

Worst part: Urgh. like pretty much everything.

Best part: Learned something new.
