Excerpt

We hooked our arms around each other’s shoulders immediately after getting out of the car and made our way to the club entrance. This one was a popular hangout, but we had VIP status here. Everyone knew us, we could pretty much drop by at any point. Having a werewolf in my tribe for an owner sure sweetened the deal for us, but so did the large amounts of cash we’d dropped here. This was usually the first stop on our nights out. Because of our special treatment, we had access to the owner’s offices. That meant we could quench our thirst with a first catch of the night. We’d typically fly solo for this, finding our own prey, taking them somewhere private, and enjoying the hot and hard sex. Then we’d rejoin the other for one last drink before going to a different club. We’d just randomly pick another Ni-chome hangout and start the other type of hunt: finding males we could share. One or two, depending on who we’d meet. Once we found them, we’d go back to Blake’s place and enjoy our spoils. Everyone from the bouncers to the bartenders and the owner himself came to greet us. We had been no-shows for about a year and it seemed like our return was quite the event. It felt good to be treated like that, it made the club seem like a place we hung out with friends more than our hunting grounds for anonymous sex. It was probably my need to belong that caused those feelings anyway. We had our very own, fine-tuned strategy when we were on the prowl. We’d go by the bar first, get a drink and finish it while chatting and saying hello to the people we knew at the club. This time it took a lot longer than usual, because there were questions about what we’d been up to. Blake took the lead and gave them vague answers, giving me time to notice the owner avert his eyes from me. So he knew…. I downed my drink and asked for another one. What the hell, it was bound to happen and I was determined not to let it spoil my good mood. The next step was squeezing through the mass of bodies dancing and grinding against each other until we reached the middle of the ring. We’d start dancing, facing each other and pretending to be paying attention to the other’s dance moves. We’d never really danced with each other, just in close proximity, moving in a circle of sorts. We needed that distance to survey the crowds. We’d each find a few marks, making eye contact and staring them down now and then, until they started to move and we’d watch them levitate toward us. Soon, a tight circle of interesting options was dancing around us, and we’d take our time testing all of them out. A little groping was always nice. Tonight those we’d picked were joined by others. Being away for a year meant you suddenly turned into a new face, the thrill of a fresh conquest bringing all the boys to the yard. They circled us, trying to show their best traits. Damn, this was easy! We looked great and we knew it. Genetics and the hard training had a lot to do with that, but it sure made finding sex partners extremely easy. For a moment, I thought about how much better sex was when it wasn’t just a random hookup, but I shook it off. Get it the fuck together, Shiki! I kept chastising myself till I stopped thinking of things I had no control over. Instead, I let the scent of arousal, hot male bodies, and alcohol drown my mind and make my prick stir. Lust was easy to give in to. Once that happened, I turned into the predator that I was. Blake chose faster than me, one of the guys now flush against his chest as he ground his hips and probably his stiff cock into the man’s ass. The guy was already ecstatic, obscenely hard and almost high on lust. I wasn’t ready to commit to one male for the night. As Blake dragged his conquest away from the dance

floor, I let the ones that were there for me surround me, reaching out to touch me, cup me, get a feel of what they might get if they were lucky. It was a heady feeling, being so badly wanted. Sure, half of them were only there for a one time deal, but I knew that given half a chance, a couple of them would want more. I had something akin to a sixth sense in telling them apart. It was something in their eyes that betrayed them and I was always quick to weed them out. I was always looking for fun, not for people to hurt. Sure, it would sometimes turn out my hookups wanted more, but nine out of ten times that happened it was only more sex they craved. Making sure I did not choose someone in search of a relationship was my way of playing fair. One of the guys dancing around me finally got my cock to twitch. He had a certain grace to his moves, a mystery to his smile, and I could guess he knew exactly how to use that to his advantage. He was targeting me as much as I was targeting him, and I had a kink for bending over men who thought they would entrap me instead of becoming a simple conquest. I was never the mouse in this game, unfortunately for them. With practiced moves, I reached out and grabbed the back of his neck, pulling him closer and spinning him around at the same time. Through the madness of the club, I still heard his groan when his body pressed into mine and my arm tightened around his throat. I grabbed his waist with my free hand, pressing his perky ass into my groin and leading his moves. We kept on dancing for a while, my hands roaming all over his body, getting him all sensitive and responsive. I finally gave in, turning his face so he could see my mouth when I spoke the word we had been both waiting for: “Ikuzo.” About half an hour later, I got out of the club owner’s office, waving goodbye to the pretty boy I’d left on his couch. Poor thing was drained and dizzy, so I stopped a waiter along the way, instructing him to take some food and water to him. I gingerly went down the stairs, smiling at the memory of his moans and pleas and the way he’d chanted the names of the gods. I liked getting off, but I could never do it properly if the other party wasn’t enjoying it too. If I just wanted something to squeeze and stroke my cock, I had a hand for that. The only purpose of having another person there was to share the fun. I was still tucking my shirt in when I spotted Blake at the bar, his stool turned so he could survey the floor. Our eyes locked and my grin widened, the corners of my mouth reaching for my eyes. There was warmth flooding my chest and I was so glad to see my chibi, as if it had been ages since I’d last seen him. Blake jumped out of his chair and stalked closer. I felt drawn to him, like the distance between us was hard to handle for a reason. Maybe I’d gotten too clingy over the weeks he’d spent doting over me. Or maybe I just needed my best friend for a while. We stopped in the middle of the dance floor, staring at each other and grinning like idiots. I felt as if I was floating, anchored only by his presence. The music, the booze, the post-coital bliss, they were all dragging me left and right, while those bright green eyes of Blake’s centered me. We moved at the same time, right hand reaching for the other’s nape, faces drawing closer, lips brushing against each other. As our mouths moved together, I felt everything spinning around me, yet I wasn’t dizzy. It was more like a strong spell, something that drew us together as our tongues tasted each other after a pause of about fifteen years. Blake tasted heady, overpowering. It was new and familiar, kissing him. Yet it felt ten thousand times better than it had in the past, when we were just learning. When we finally came up for air, our groins were pressed together. Blake and I were hard and looking for friction. Fuck, it felt so good! Yet the realization of who it was I was kissing sobered me up in a flash. I couldn’t look away from him though. Blake licked his lips and moaned at the taste, and I almost kissed

him again just for that. His eyes focused, however, and a startled gasp left his lips. He cleared his throat and we both knew the moment was over. I suddenly felt bad. I’d preyed on my best friend in my lust-filled state. Maybe my sex thirst had not been entirely extinguished by the guy I’d picked up earlier. Yeah, that might have been it. Yet the taste of Blake’s lush lips and that sweet mouth clung to me, along with my swift response to him touching me. This was wrong though. He was my best friend, no way we could do this and keep our friendship intact. “Hell of a celebratory kiss, winggapo,” Blake said, his hand around my shoulders, walking me to the exit. “Yes, indeed,” I replied, playing along. Smart as always, my chibi had found an explanation to get us through what happened. I grabbed it with all of my might and held on to it while we made our way outside.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

How the pair didn’t feel all the eyes upon them, Benton couldn’t explain. They were standing close enough Benton could make out every letter of Jamie’s name spelled out in permanent ink across the inside of Hawke’s forearm. Knowing Jamie, as he did, the man couldn’t care less who was watching them. He didn’t relent until Hawke was laughing so hard no sound emerged. Benton went back to watching Maddox. There was something about the entire situation niggling at that back of his mind. Something slightly off. Maddox was so focused on the pair he’d yet to notice Benton, leaving him free to puzzle it out.

This man had cheated on Hawke, throwing everything away. By all accounts, he should’ve let this go a long time ago. He’d broken things off and moved another man in. His expression said none of those things. Benton glanced around, Hawke and Jamie were still dancing. Sophie and Joss were in the corner having an up-close discussion. How had Joss came to be with Sophie over the last few months? None of it made any sense. If Maddox had put Hawke out and moved Joss in, why would Maddox watch Hawke instead of Joss? Benton’s gaze returned to Maddox. Maddox smiled at the sight of Hawke’s laughter and Benton knew. It was exactly like someone ripped back the curtain, revealing the real story.

“Oh my god.”

Maddox visibly startled at Benton’s cry. He couldn’t stop. The truth slammed into him with such power Benton couldn’t contain it. It brought him to his feet. Maddox lifted his glass to his lips, taking a sip. Benton wondered if the man was attempting to hide his emotions before focusing on him.

“Didn’t see you there,” Maddox said after a moment. Benton ignored Maddox’s statement of the obvious.

“Oh my god,” Benton repeated, pointing at him. He didn’t care if he looked like a madman.

Summary: Owen Meade is desperately in need of a hero. Raised by a mother who made him ashamed of his stutter, his sexual orientation, and his congenitally amputated arm, Owen lives like a hermit in his Tucker Springs apartment. But then hunky veterinarian Nick Reynolds moves in downstairs.

Nick is sexy and confident, and makes Owen comfortable with himself in a way nobody ever has. He also introduces Owen to his firecracker of a little sister, who was born with a similar congenital amputation but never let it stand in her way. When she signs the two of them up for piano lessons—and insists that they play together in a recital—Owen can’t find a way to say no. Especially since it gives him a good excuse to spend more time with Nick.

Owen knows he’s falling hard for his neighbor, but every time he gets close, Nick inexplicably pulls away. Battling his mother’s scorn and Nick’s secrets, Owen soon realizes that instead of waiting for a hero, it’s time to be one—for himself and for Nick.

Title: Sweetwater
Author: Lisa Henry
Year of Publication: 2014
Genre: LGBT, Historical fiction
Format: Ebook
Length: 240 pages
First Line: “A spray of blood hit his face like hot rain, and Elijah Carter clamped his mouth shut.”

Summary: Wyoming Territory, 1870.

Elijah Carter is afflicted. Most of the townsfolk of South Pass City treat him as a simpleton because he’s deaf, but that’s not his only problem. Something in Elijah runs contrary to nature and to God. Something that Elijah desperately tries to keep hidden.

Harlan Crane, owner of the Empire saloon, knows Elijah for what he is—and for all the ungodly things he wants. But Crane isn’t the only one. Grady Mullins desires Elijah too, but unlike Crane, he refuses to push the kid.

When violence shatters Elijah’s world, he is caught between two very different men and two devastating urges: revenge, and despair. In a boomtown teetering on the edge of a bust, Elijah must face what it means to be a man in control of his own destiny, and choose a course that might end his life . . . or truly begin it for the very first time.

Review: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

Making this as spoiler-free as possible. Apparently this is very hard but I think I made it work.

I have to warn that there is a non-con scene in the beginning of this novel and a dub-con relationship/bad BDSM relationship as a result of that scene. The novel is totally worth it if you are able to get past the non-con scene. But it is graphic and the POV is of the victim who is confused and a virgin. If you can read past that scene you will find that Sweetwater is a wonderful novel. But I can’t discourage anyone not wanting to read it due to that scene since it is a trigger for a lot of people.

Sweetwater is such a wonderful novel. It has so many themes. It’s about death, revenge, the difference in bad and good BDSM relationships, religion, how it feels like to feel different and alone. It’s really amazing. There are some outstanding quotes in this book. Here’s a couple that should be spoiler-free:

“Someone dies, there oughta be something. It oughta shake the world! You’re not supposed to walk away!”

Jesus, that line It oughta shake the world! just brings up so many memories for me. I think anyone who has had a loved one die and has to move on the following day with school or work like nothing happened can related to what Elijah says here. This quote really breaks my heart.

“Sometimes he liked to think about leaving South Pass City and going west like he was meant to, like his dream-self had, except he suspected that the idea he had of what it would be like there was no more real than the version of himself that was whole. He would get there and it would be no different than here. Going west wouldn’t heal him. Wouldn’t transform him. Nothing would.
Even in a perfect world, Elijah would be flawed.”

I don’t get overly-emotional over books too often but I did end up crying during this novel. I can’t say at what point or why because then I’d be spoiling stuff. But kudos to Lisa Henry for making me cry.

The main character Elijah is

REVIEW: Swan Prince by Erin Lark

I RECEIVED A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR A HONEST REVIEW.

Title: Swan Prince
Author: Erin Lark
Year of Publication: 2014
Genre: LGBT
Format: Ebook
Length: 149 pages
First Line: “Red-hot knives bit under my skin and straight into the bone, threatening to toss me the three hundred or so feet to the ground.”

Summary: Trapped between his royal heritage and swan shifter status, Oliver doesn’t pay close attention during his flock’s winter migration, and gets caught in the crosshairs of a trigger-happy hunter.

Careening toward the ground with no place to go, Oliver submits to his human form. As his swan’s feathers recede, he seeks shelter in an old barn.

Bastion’s spent the better part of his adult life caring for a bunch of bullheaded stallions, but this is the first time he’s ever found a naked and gorgeous man in one of his stalls. When he asks the man his name, he doesn’t get a reply. Without a wallet or a voice to tell him who this stranger is, Bastion takes Oliver in, clothes him and tends to a mysterious wound.

Oliver has nowhere else to go. Bastian is in a bind after firing a farmhand who would much rather call in sick than do his job. When passion flares, can Bastion and Oliver overcome their differences, or will this swan prince fly south?

Review: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

Swan Prince is a gay & modern fairytale retelling of the Swan Princess. Kind of. The Swan Princess is better than this.

If you are looking for an easy, fluffy read than Swan Prince is totally for you. There’s HEA, no conflict between the characters, no challenges to speak of. Just easy going all around. The only ‘problems’ to speak of were the ones of a wishy-washy prince, communication skills and ‘holy crap you’re really a swan?’ I thought the author lost a potential plot line early on. The story starts off with Oliver, the swan prince, being shot by a hunter. This hunter never makes a reappearance. Really? He didn’t chase after his kill or his hunting dogs didn’t? C’mon. And, psh, I dunno, maybe this novel could have used something like an obstacle or villain to help it out.

I guess I was expecting more out of a book. If you want something to read to pass the time that you don’t really have to think about, Swan Prince is perfect. If you want something challenging or thought-provoking… move along.

I have to say this though. The way Swan Prince ended left it open for a possible great sequel. The characters and story were interesting enough that if a sequel were written I think I would pick it up.

Worst part: Felt like it missed essential elements

Best part: Easy read

Review: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I have to say dr.a.g. is probably one of the most beautiful coffee table books out there. The subject matter is unique of course and this book will only be found in the most awesome of tables.

The photos in this book are beyond gorgeous. I mean they are all showstoppers. Very detailed and vivid. It’s a real treat to see all of these amazing drag queens from around the globe with their different styles– some imitating famous women like Bette Midler or Liza Minnelli, some dressing for an era and others clearly being their beautiful selves.

You can tell a lot of work went into making this book as you go through and see where everyone is from. There are drag queens from Belgium, Chicago, Canada, and even Africa. Each photo is unique to each woman and fits their distinct personality– no photo looks alike.

My one criticism of this book is that I would have like to have been a bio on at least some of the drag queens. Instead, we just know their stage name and place of residence. There is a little info on Jimmy James but that is it. There’s also a few quotes tossed in here and there.

If you love interesting coffee table books, get this book. If you are or know a drag queen, totally get this book. In fact, my brother & brother-in-law are drag queens and I am buy this for them later. Shh! Don’t tell them! 😉 dr.a.g. is worth it.

Worst part: Wished there had been a lengthy bio on all of the drag queens.

Best part: Gorgeous pictures!

Grade: B

Recommend For: Fabulous drag queens, friends and family of drag queens. In fact I will be buying this for my brother & brother-in-law who are drag queens! Shh! Don’t tell them! 😉
