REVIEW: The Monkey Kingdom (Species of Monkeys) by Baby Professor

Title: The Monkey Kingdom (Species of Monkeys)
Author: Baby Professor
Year of Publication: 2015
Genre: Childrens
Format: Ebook
Length: 32 pages
First Line: “There are currently 264 known monkey species.”

Summary: Monkeys are fascinating creatures in the sense that they have several familiar characteristics. The theory of evolution even states that we evolved from them. Learning about monkeys will help a child better understand Darwin’s theory, and decide whether he/she would believe in it or not. Colorful and well-formatted, this educational book is definitely a must-have!

Review: I was drawn into this kids book because as a kid I was always in love with monkeys. Recently I was on a cruise where they showed the film ‘Monkey Kingdom’, so I was a bit curious about this. Note, this had nothing at all to do with that film. The book started out stating that there’s over 264 species of monkeys. Then the book briefly explored… 14 varieties. It’s not anything elaborate either. There’s a stock photo of the monkey along with 1-2 random facts that could have been easily swiped from the opening paragraphs of Wikipedia. I don’t believe that much effort was put into this book. It’s definitely way above the grade level of most 3rd graders. I’d suggest reading this with a 4 or 5 year old. There’s no glossary which I found odd for a childrens science book. The pictures are very bright, vibrant and eye-catching. The font used is very clear and bright as well. It’s really nice over all.

Worst part: Possible lack of effort put into making this.

Best part: Colorful photos and clear font.

Grade: C

Recommend For: Parents and teachers
